In townships and other areas where poverty persists, many young people are drawn into a lifestyle of gang culture and criminal activity. Yet for many, music has become a powerful force in overcoming these struggles — a means of expression, resilience, and hope. Without access to the right resources and opportunities, however, this potential too often goes unrealised.
The Bridges Academy, located in the Langa Township, was conceived to change that. The existing building was sensitively refurbished and extended to create a creative hub where young aspiring musicians are given the tools, space, and community needed to pursue their dreams and develop their craft.
The Music Box
The project breathes new life into an existing dilapidated building, refurbishing and upgrading the interior while adding a bold new extension to serve as the public foyer.
The extension draws its form from the dynamic shapes of musical instruments, its trapezoid geometry naturally reducing noise reverberation within the space. More than a functional gesture, the angular sculptural form gives the Bridges Academy a striking presence on the street — announcing itself as a place where creativity and community converge.
Interior Design
The project was generously sponsored by Nando's. The interior and furnishings, designed by Tracy Lynch of Studio LeeLynch, celebrate the vibrant energy of South Africa — weaving together the works of local artists and makers into a space that is as culturally rich as it is inspiring. Every detail has been carefully considered to motivate and uplift the students who pass through its doors.
Contributions from initiatives such as the Spier Arts Trust and the Cape Town Society for the Blind further enrich the space, embedding it deeply within the fabric of the community it serves.
