VISSERSHOK CONTAINER CLASSROOM
Location: Durbanville, Cape Town
Program: Education
Client: Safmarine / Woolworths
Status: Completed
Located in the picturesque Durbanville wine valley, Vissershok Primary School serves the children of farm workers and families from the nearby Du Noon Township. Faced with a critical shortage of classroom space, an old shipping container was transformed into a bold, joyful learning environment for 25 Grade R learners. The container's striking red exterior, colourful window frames, and generous overhanging roof canopy give the building a strong, playful identity that stands out proudly in the rural landscape.
The concept diagram captures the project's simple but powerful ambition — to Learn, Play, Gather, and Grow. Inside, the compact space is ingeniously fitted out as a bright classroom and library, complete with bookshelves and colourful beanbags. Outside, a timber play structure, swing set, and vegetable garden complete a holistic environment designed to nurture curiosity, community, and a love of learning from the very earliest age.
Multifunctional Design
Built with limited means and budget, the design made the best use of available space by incorporating various elements for the kids to learn, gather, play and grow.
Design Features
To reduce heat gain, a large roof shelters the container from direct sunlight. Cross-ventilation is achieved through a series of colourful windows located on each side of the container.
The sloping site provided an opportunity to extend the concrete plinth into a series of stepped seating for the children to eat lunch and as an assembly area for the school.
