CORTEN HOUSE
Location: West Coast, Cape Town
Program: Residential
Client: Private
Status: In progress
Area: 250sqm
Drawing inspiration from the shipwrecks found along the West Coast, the house features a bold corten steel screen along its eastern façade. Rising from the fynbos like a rusted hull, the screen acts as a shield that shelters and protects the house from the harsh coastal winds and salt air. A timber boardwalk cuts through the indigenous vegetation, drawing visitors through a narrow opening in the screen and into the protected world within. The natural colour and texture of the weathered steel blends seamlessly into the ochre tones of the surrounding landscape.
On the ocean side, the house opens up entirely — a long, low horizontal form with full-height glazing and warm timber screens that frame uninterrupted views of the beach and sea beyond. A generous overhanging roof provides shelter from the elements, while a recessed pool at the beach edge completes this quiet retreat, perfectly poised between the wild coastal landscape and the calm of the interior.
